Chandigarh: UT Deputy Commissioner Brijendra Singh gave Rs 1 lakh to the family of Khushpreet Singh,who was kidnapped from Burail and later found dead. The incident had sparked outrage in the city with residents demanding action against police personnel and officials of the Administration for their failure to catch the culprits.

Inspector dies of heart attack on duty

Chandigarh: Inspector Bakshish Singh of the Sector 31 police station died of a heart attack on Monday night. Bakshish was posted as the station house officer. He was cremated on Tuesday afternoon with full police honours,since he died on duty. Top police officers attended the cremation. According to Bakshish’s family,he had a hectic routine on Monday and did not eat the entire day. He was busy attending to an incident where two groups had entered into a clash. After taking legal action against the miscreants,Singh complained of severe chest pain. He was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32,where he died. A postmortem was conducted,which confirmed that he had died of a heart attack. Singh had joined the police force in 1990 as an assistant inspector.

Minor girl sent to Nari Niketan

Chandigarh: The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Anshul Berry sent a 17-year-old girl to Nari Niketan on Tuesday. The daughter of a police constable,the girl had refused to return to her parents after she had eloped with a local youth. Claiming that they were married,the boy,Vinod,sought permission from the court to take the girl home. The court dismissed the application. On January 4,the police had produced the girl before the court,where she had denied having been abducted,as alleged by her father. Earlier,he had moved a petition in the High Court,accusing the police of not registering an FIR in the case.

Sanitation drives to become weekly affair

Chandigarh: The Municipal Corporation will begin sanitation campaigns on a weekly basis,involving every wing of the civic body,to sanitise the areas and also remove construction waste. Roads and parks will also be repaired. The campaign,to be carried out in all colonies and villages of the city,will be flagged off by Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh on January 20 from Village Maloya.

CITCO to renovate Hotel Mountview

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO) will renovate the rooms and suites at Hotel Mountview at a cost of Rs 1.6 crore. The decision was taken at a meeting of Board of Directors held ion Tuesday. CITCO will contribute an additional Rs 5 crore towards gratuity funds and Rs 1 crore towards leave encashment funds for its employees.

Padma Vibushan sought for Rock Garden creator

Chandigarh: The Nek Chand Foundation has once again advocated the nomination of creator of the Rock Garden Nek Chand for Padma Vibushan. This is the third year that the foundation has advocated such a nomination. Letters of support have been sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,Congress chief Sonia Gandhi,Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil as well as President Pratibha Patil. Nek Chand was awarded Padma Shri in 1984.

BJP slams Centre for petrol price hike

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh unit of BJP on Tuesday condemned the recent hike in petrol prices. In a joint statement,president Sanjay Tandon and general secretary Satinder Singh said that it was a failure of the UPA government at the Centre. Terming the hike as unjustified,the statement further said that the reasons given by the government justifying the rise are incorrect.

Camp held for special children

Chandigarh: A medical camp began at Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 10 for the differently-abled children in the age group of 6 to 14 years. The camp will continue till Wednesday. The first day saw around 70 children from various government schools/AIE centers participating.

40 names struck off BPL list

Ambala: As many as 40 people got their names struck off from the Below Poverty Line (BPL) list during a survey conducted by the district administration. The administration had received complaints that well-to-do people also had got their names entered in the BPL list. Following this,the administration had appealed to such people to get their names struck off voluntarily,otherwise legal action would be taken.
