Employees of seven city colleges stage protest,seek UGC pay scales
Chandigarh: The teaching and non-teaching employees of seven non-government colleges of Chandigarh ceased work for two periods and staged a dharna on the college campus to press for the revision of pay scales of the non-teaching employees,release of arrears as per UGC pay scales and other demands. Dr Jagwant Singh,President Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU),said there was no justification in denying the revised pay scales to only 250 odd non-teaching employees of these colleges,when everyone else in Chandigarh had received the benefit similarly having released the entire arrears of revised UGC pay scales to teachers of government colleges. The staff further added that it is the responsibility of Chandigarh Administration to take its recommendation to government of India to implement the statutory provision of Punjab University calendar regarding deduction of CPF on total salary from April 1,1984. Singh demanded that the teaching and non teaching posts of these colleges going population has multiplied in these decades since last review of November 1,1979. The Union members said that if government failed to redress the grievances of employees,they will not hesitate to emulsify their agitation after October 10,2010.
GCE-20 celebrates World Tourism Day
Chandigarh: World Tourism Day was celebrated in the Government College of Education,Sector 20,Chandigarh auditorium by students. The students highlighted the importance of tourism in the life of an individual. On the occasion,speech was delivered and poems were recited by students. Chandigarh Administration is also celebrating tourism week from September 26 to October 1. The students also highlighted the fact that every region of the world is distinct and thus has something to offer and gain through travel and tourism particularly in the developing nations such as India. Tourism has lot to offer for the diversity and culture of the nations. On the occasion,Principal congratulated the students for their wholehearted participation to commemorate the World Tourism Day.
Former PSEB chairman Brar passes away
Patiala: Former chairman of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB),Zora Singh Brar,died today after a prolonged illness at the Fortis Hospital in Mohali. He was 78. He is survived by his wife,two sons and a daughter. He will be cremated tomorrow at Patiala. Being a confidante of the former Indian president Gian Zail Singh,Brar was instrumental in achieving 100 per cent electrification of Punjab in 1977. Son of freedom fighter Hakam Singh of village Brar Mehman in district Bathinda,Zora Singh also served as the chairman of Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC).
Car stolen from Sector 10
Chandigarh: An Innova car( HR-03R-0060) was stolen from Sector 10 late last night. The theft came to light in the morning. Abhinav told police that he had come back from some work last night around 11.30 and parked his vehicle outside his house. When he woke up in the morning,the vehicle was missing from the spot. The police have registered a case of theft and are investigating the matter.
Bag containing Rs 50,000 snatched
Ambala: Thieves snatched cash worth Rs 50,000 from an accountant of a transport company outside the HDFC Bank branch on Nicholson Road in Ambala Cantonment today. According to information,Dinesh Kumar had come to deposit Rs 4.40 lakh in the bank. The bank cashier while depositing the cash pointed out that some amount from a 100 notes bundle was short hence he he refused to accept the bundle of Rs 50,000. On getting instruction from the Anand Transport company to bring back the bundle,Dinesh was coming back on foot when two youths on black Pulser escaped after snatching his bag. The police have registered a case.
