Annual convocation today,PU geared up to host Chancellor

Prior to this, the team of UT police had inspected the venue and campus on Tuesday before awarding its sanction for the programme.

With names like the country’s Vice President and Panjab University’s Chancellor M Hamid Ansari, former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chaterjee, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj,Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil,Governor of Haryana Jagannath Pahadia,Governor of Jammu and Kashmir N N Vohra, and Dr N K Ganguly, renowned medical scientist to mark their presence on the 61st Annual Convocation scheduled on Friday, the Panjab University is gearing up for the function.

While the entire campus is being spruced up for the function, security concerns are also being taken care of. Keeping these concerns in mind,a full dress rehearsal was conducted on campus by the UT police on Thursday. Prior to this, the team of UT police had inspected the venue and campus on Tuesday before awarding its sanction for the programme. Signs of preparations include white washing going on in the entire campus, security beef-up at the entrance gates and cleanliness drives.

While the dress rehearsal for students would be conducted in the morning at the venue i.e. Gymnasium Hall on the same day,the actual function will commence at 3 pm. With a tea break from 4.30 pm to 6 pm,the degrees will be awarded after the break. As the chief guest Vice President and Chancellor M Hamid Ansari will leave after the first half, the remaining degrees would be awarded by V-C R C Sobti.

Citing shortage of time, this time again gold medals would not be awarded to the students on the same day as only degrees are to be handed over to toppers. “If the medals were to be included in the schedule,it would not only be inconvenient to the students but also their family members who would accompany them. Thus,it has been kept for January 6 and the university is not inviting any dignitary politician for awarding medals,” said Sobti.

During the convocation, honorary degrees would be awarded to Sushma Swaraj,N N Vohra and Dr N K Ganguly. While,Somnath Chaterjee who has confirmed his presence will receive his honorary degree announced last year as he could not make for the convocation held on February 14 this year.
