An impending disaster

Despite numerous drives conducted by the Municipal Corporation,violations galore as shop owners have encroached upon corridors by putting their goods on display outside the shops. This leaves little space for anyone to move around in markets. And in case of fire,the clogged markets cannot make any space for fire tenders.

Recently,traders had demanded more space to display their goods but the plea was turned down by the authorities.

Besides,traders also have illegal electricity connections with wires hanging loose from various places. The exit routes are also hard to find as there are no indicators. With these markets attracting a large number of residents especially on the weekends,the incidence of any mishap looms large.

The parking lots near the market are chaotic. Haphazardly parked vehicles are a common sight. The shopowners,meanwhile,claim that markets have been functioning like this for years,so they do not expect any untoward incident to take place. Though the civic body conducts anti-encroachment drives in these markets from time to time,however,as soon as the drive is complete and enforcement staff leaves,encroachments crop up again. Officials,meanwhile,state that the drives would continue and efforts are being made to create awareness among traders.
