Amritpal Singh still on run; cops question wife, mother

While Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh continued to elude the authorities for the fifth day, Punjab Police on Wednesday recovered the motorcycle that he had reportedly used to escape and questioned his wife Kirandeep Kaur, an NRI, at his native village in connection with fundings received by his organisation.

The bike on which he escaped was found near a canal in Jalandhar, police said.

A police team headed by two officers, including a woman DSP, questioned Amritpal’s wife and his mother at their house in Jallupur Khera village on Wednesday afternoon. Her name allegedly came up in connection with funds received from foreign sources for Amritpal’s activities and the group Waris Punjab De.

Amritpal got married to the UK-based Kirandeep in February. A senior police officer said the two became friends over the Internet and subsequently bonded over their ideology.

On Wednesday, The Indian Express went to her village, Kullar, near Jalandhar, and found the family’s house locked. Neighbours said the family had migrated to the UK a long time ago and rarely visited the village. They said Amritpal had never come to the village and Kirandeep, too, had not been to her ancestral house after getting married.

Villagers at Nangal Ambian village in Jalandhar, where Amritpal had reportedly changed into western attire, said he remained there until a little before 3 pm.

On Wednesday, Shahkot police station in Jalandhar district registered another case against Amritpal based on the statement of Ranjit Singh, the priest of Nangal Ambian village where he reportedly changed his clothes.

On Saturday, after police launched a crackdown against him and his organisation, Amritpal managed to give police the slip after changing his vehicle, according to the police. He was initially in a Mercedes but switched to a Maruti Brezza SUV during the police action, police have said. On Tuesday, a photo appeared on social media showing a man who appeared to be Amritpal riding pillion on a bike, wearing a pink turban and goggles, indicating that he had tried to alter his appearance to hoodwink the police.

Another CCTV footage of Jalandhar toll plaza, which also surfaced on social media, showed Amritpal purportedly escaping in a SUV. Amritpal has a non-bailable warrant and the National Security Act has been invoked against him.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday evening Jalandhar police presented four accused in Nakodar court to seek police remand as these had provided a Brezza vehicle to Amritpal Singh and had also arranged two motorcycles including a bullet to facilitate his escape when police were chasing him on March 18 in an attempt to arrest him. Amritpal had frequently changed his vehicles to dodge the police. As he alighted from his Mercedes car and reached Gurudwara village Nangal Amabia Khurd under Shahkot Police station in a Brezza car along with these arrested four accused.

Among these accused included Manpreet Singh of Nawa Quila village in Shahkot (Jalandhar), Harpreet Singh of Kotla Naudh Singh village in Bullowal (Hoshiarpur), Gurbhej Singh of Gondara Bhajakhan village in Faridkot and Hardeep Singh of Bal Nou in Nakodar Jalandhar. they were booked under sections 212 and 216 of IPC (Harbouring offender) and sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.

Police in the court told that these youths have helped Amritpal Singh in his running from the spot. They came with him in a Brezza car to the Gurudwara and then also arranged two motorcycles for him (Amritpal).

Police said that they got the tip-off that Brezza used to bring Amritpal to Gurudwara was lying at the place of Manpreet alias Mann and when police raided his place it was recovered along with arms and ammunition. The police arrested these four also.

While presented in court one of them was on a wheelchair.

Advocate Gaurav Nagraj, who is presenting the case of these accused, told the media that police had sought 10 days remand but five days police remand was granted by the court because all the recovery has already been done from them by the police. He alleged that third-degree torture was given to his clients. One of the accused,who was brought to the court in a wheelchair, did not tell the reason of his coming to court on a wheelchair. Also police too did not reply aboiut this when the media asked the officials present there.

Meanwhile police has recovered one of the two motorcycles. The bike was recovered from Darapur area of Jalandahr under Bilga police station. Amritpal and three other had fled away on two bikes after changing his cloth at Nangal Ambia gurudwara on March 18.
