The selection committee formed by the Union Health Ministry has named 2005 batch IAS officer Amitabh Avasthi for the post of Deputy Director Administration (DDA) which is considered the most crucial post at PGIMER.

Sources said that the committee met earlier this week in Delhi and confirmed the name of Avasthi as the new DDA. The post of DDA has been vacant since December last year, after the tenure of IRS level officer Chetan P S Rao had ended in the first week of December last year. The charge of DDA is with the Financial Advisor of the Institute currently.

According to a senior PGI official, though the name has been confirmed by the selection committee, the Institute is yet to receive the orders from the ministry. “Out of the two names which were short-listed for the post, Avasthi’s name has been confirmed by the selection committee,” the official said. ‘We are waiting for the orders from the health ministry.”

A ministry official said that Avasthi had also also communicated verbally about the decision. “It (the issuing of order) is in process and would happen shortly,” the official said.

Amitabh Avasthi is currently posted as managing director of Himachal Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited. While Avasthi is primarily a HAS officer of 1990 batch, he got inducted into IAS in 2005. Apart from holding the post of commissioner, municipal corporation, Shimla, he has also served as deputy commissioner, Kullu, in the past.

The selection took the PGI administration and the Union Health Ministry at least three months before they cleared Avasthi’s name earlier this week. This is not the first instance in which the Union Health Ministry has taken too long for decisions regarding the PGI.

In January. after a delay of one year, the health ministry had finally given its nod and appointed a senior PGI doctor as the new chief vigilance officer of the Institute.
