Alliance Francaise de Chandigarh organised a jazz concert featuring jazz trio ‘Jazzeando’ on Friday. With influences from various musical cultures such as Western, West African, Afro-Cuban, Indian and Latin jazz, this is the band’s first visit to the city.

Only eight months old, the band boldly explores musical boundaries, taking its audience from swing to salsa and from soulful ballads to wild rumba. It includes artistes Emmanuel Simon from France on percussions, Pradyumna Singh Manot from India on piano and Megan Powers from the US on vocals.

On being asked about the influence of music in their lives, Pradyumna and Emmanuel said that “they don’t really know what their lives would have been without music”, while Megan looked back to the days when she found satisfaction only in music.

Simon is a versatile musician from Paris, who has whipped up compositions for theatre and short films. Initially trained as a western classical pianist, he holds degrees in western musicology, western classical music and modern music.

Pradyumna aka Paddy started playing the piano at the age of six. Trained in western classical, jazz (with Madhav Chari), Latin, Latin jazz and north Indian classical music, he has performed in many prestigious venues and festivals across India and has been a regular at the Congo Square Jazz Festival for the last eight years.

As for Powers, her career kick-started at Igor Butman’s iconic Moscow jazz haunt in an impromptu session with Igor and his band. She has held stage in some of New York City’s most notable underground music havens, and has sung with the likes of Igor, Jon Christopher Allen and Ben Paterson, among others.
