‘Akalis murdering democracy; will choke legislative process’

Accusing the ruling SAD-BJP government of high-handedness and murdering democracy, the Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar,on Saturday, said the Congress will give a “befitting reply” to the government in the ensuing Punjab Budget session that begins on June 19.

Accusing the ruling SAD-BJP government of high-handedness and murdering democracy, the Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar,on Saturday, said the Congress will give a “befitting reply” to the government in the ensuing Punjab Budget session that begins on June 19.

“We will choke the legislative process and make sure the bigwigs of the government tender an apology for their high-handedness. The Akali-BJP combine seems to be in some sort of hallucination about its trick victory and Congress will give them a befitting and determined reply,“ Jakhar said after visiting Madan Lal Thekedar, a former MLA who has been implicated and arrested on alleged charges of assault on police and causing disturbance in electoral processes under the People’s representation Act .

Jakhar also accused the present police set-up of having crossed all limits and said the current khaki dispensation was more hostile than the policemen under British rule, who “had been unleashed on Congressmen and freedom fighters during the Independence struggle”.

“Punjab police are actually Akali workers in khakhi uniform, who are there to implement the whimsical dictates of the Akali leaders. Is this the way to conduct elections and seek a public mandate? Is this the way democracy works? What is the fun of having election for formality sake, when you intimidate workers as well contestants to withdraw from the polls?” Jakhar said.

The CLP leader further alleged that there was nobody to deal with complaints from the Congress. “Where is the mechanism to address Congressmen’s complaints? There is a total collapse of official and institutional mechanism. In Ghanaur, for 4,641 voters, you have a posse of more than 600 policemen, including SP’s and a SSP,to manage law and order. This clearly shows that the top polices bosses are being instructed to get the desired poll result,” Jakhar said.

Jakhar claimed that had the elections been fair, the SAD would not have secured a single seat in the Patiala municipal corporation elections.
