The very fact that the visit by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday was reportedly the outcome of efforts made by Union Minister for Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja,was enough for the beleaguered Bhupinder Singh Hooda government to conduct a show of strength in Jind.

According to sources,Sonia decided to visit Jind after Selja wrote to her about the plight of Dalits in the state following the recent meeting of the state coordination committee to discuss the burning issues facing Haryana.

Selja a known Hooda detractor while speaking to The Indian Express,admitted that she raised the issue at the coordination committee meet and later wrote to the Congress president as well. I now hope that the administration will take stringent action following the Congress presidents visit. Atrocities on Dalits cannot be allowed at any cost. I am sure that the state administration will take the message and ensure safety of Dalits, Selja said,adding that Sonia was concerned about the happenings in the state and hence,decided to pay a visit.

Selja had been critical of the state government for its alleged inept handling of the cases of Dalit atrocities and openly expressed her displeasure at the Congress coordination committee meet.
