The state police also formed as SIT, which will have Ludhiana Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu as its chief and DCP (detective), Ludhiana, Harmeet Singh Hundal, Additional DCP-2 , Ludhiana Sohali Qasim, and SP (probe), Sangrur, Palwinder Singh Cheema, as members. A day after the arrest of three policemen — including a superintendent of police — more heads rolled in the case involving the alleged custodial torture of an advocate and another man in Muktsar, on Thursday.
On Thursday, Muktsar SSP Harmanbir Singh Gill, and DIG (Faridkot range) Ajay Maluja were transferred out by the Punjab Police. The police on Thursday also released from jail the lawyer and another man, while filing a cancellation report of the FIR filed against them in a court.
As per details, while Gill was replaced by 2013-batch IPS officer, Bhagirath Singh Meena, Maluja was replaced by 2001-batch IPS officer, Gursharan Singh Sandhu.
As per an official order issued on Thursday, Meena will be posted as the AIG (personnel) of Punjab, while Sandhu will be posted as IGP, Bureau of Intelligence, Punjab , as well as hold charge of IGP provisioning Punjab.
The three policemen were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the alleged torture of an advocate and another man in custody, a senior officer said, adding a four-member Special Investigation Team has been formed to investigate the allegations levelled by the lawyer. All the arrested policemen have been sent to four days of police remand.
Those who have been arrested include Muktsar SP (Investigation) Ramandeep Singh Bhullar, CIA-incharge Inspector Raman Kumar Kamboj, and Head Constable Harbans Singh.
They were among the six police personnel booked on Monday for subjecting the lawyer in their custody to torture that included forcing him into sex with a co-accused. The other who were booked include Constables Bhupinder Singh, and Gurpreet Singh, and home guard Dara Singh.
Muktsar Bar Association welcomed the news of the transfers on Thursday. Bar association president Bhupinder Singh Charewan said,”We are thankful to the CM for the action taken in this case. We held a meeting of the Bar association on Thursday and it was unanimously decided to resume work from Friday onward.”
