One of the newly opened labs in GMCH-32. (Express File Photo) State-of-the-art advanced diagnostic and interventional labs, and a modern isolation ward of the Department of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine (PCCSM), were inaugurated this week at GMCH-32 in Chandigarh.
The advanced diagnostic and interventional labs (Level-V, Block-A) aim to provide world-class healthcare services to the people of Chandigarh and the region.
It was said that these labs are equipped with cutting-edge technology and the latest medical equipment to ensure accurate and timely diagnosis and intervention. According to doctors, the facility will play a “pivotal role” in advancing medical research, treatment, and patient care in the region.
These labs include bronchoscopy, a procedure in which a fibre-optic tube is passed through the airways of the patient into his lungs for various diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, thoracoscopy in which a line is passed in the chest cavity of the patient for diagnostic and treatment purposes.
Machines like PFT, a machine that measures various lung functions in health and disease states, upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, NCV for evaluating nerve function, EEG to diagnose various conditions like epilepsy, and EMG to assess the health of muscles and nerve cells that control them, are also installed.
The isolation ward is designed to provide a safe and isolated environment for patients and equipped with stringent infection control measures. Doctors said the ward conforms to standard guidelines for keeping infectious patients like more than 12 air exchanges per hour, adequate bed-to-bed distance, provision of adequate sunlight etc. In order to minimise the chances of infection, the air is sucked out from this area and expelled through filters to make it non-infectious for others.
