The Chandigarh Administration is planning to spend nearly Rs 14 crore this financial year for improving power infrastructure in the city. The Administration spent nearly Rs 35 crore last financial year for upgradation and creating new infrastructure in the sector.
UT Finance-cum-Engineering Secretary,Sanjay Kumar, said,in August 2009,a new 66 KV sub-Station in Sector 56 was commissioned to provide uninterrupted power supply to the southern sectors. Out of Rs 35 crores spent last year, nearly Rs 27 crore were incurred on 33 KV and above projects, while the remaining Rs 6.5 crore were spent on 11 KV and below works. Of the Rs 14 crore to be spent in 2009-10,Rs 9 crore would be incurred on 33 KV sub-station and other projects, while the remaining Rs 5 crore will be spent on 11 KV sub-stations, he added.
Taking note of the growing power demand in industrial areas, the Administration has decided to upgrade the existing 33 KV sub-station to 66 KV in Sector 34 and reinstall existing transformers at 66 kV sub-station in Sector 1 and 12,work for which has already been assigned to the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited. Proposal for providing automatic capacitor banks at various 66 kV sub-stations has also been mooted, which will minimise the internal power losses of sub-stations and generate quality power, Kumar said.
Officials of the UT Engineering Department said the department has already installed many transformers of higher capacity to deal with the increasing power woes of residents at various locations including sub-station Kishangarh,Sector 18,Manimajra,Industrial Area Phase I and II. We have proposed to install more transformers to meet the growing power demand at IT Park,Institutional Area at Sarangpur village,Sector 52,and Industrial Area Phase III Raipur Kalan. To avoid any breakdown due to overloading, the transmission line from Nalagarh has also been strengthened to 2 circuits, Kumar said. The Administration is also making efforts for tie-ups with other power surplus states to meet future demand of the city.
