A Foundation stone laid in 2006 near Housing Board Chowk in Manimajra stands testimony to the fact that a bridge was to be constructed in the area by the Municipal Corporation. However, three years later, the work on its construction is yet to be started. A nallah flowing through the area floods up during the monsoon, causing problems for the commuters.

At times water enters the houses in the adjoining areas. The existing bridge is low-lying and does not solve any purpose in the rains.

The proposal to construct a new bridge was mooted in 2006 and the foundation stone was laid in November that year by Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal. An amount of around Rs 41 lakh was also approved for the project.

The then mayor Surinder Singh, whose name is also on the foundation stone, said, the construction of the bridge would solve the problems of the residents, especially during the monsoons when the area was flooded. Three small bridges on the nallah were constructed at different places in 2006,but this project could not take off.

Area councillor Gurcharan Dass Kalaa said the estimates were being prepared and work on the construction would start soon. According to the officials, tenders for the bridge were invited six times, between August 2006 and May 2007,but no bid was received.

Since then,a number of new buildings have been constructed in the area. The hydraulic data has also changed. Now a new design and revised estimates will have to be made as the construction according to the old design might not sustain, said officials.

SE (B&R) Yogesh Gupta said a consultant has been engaged for the purpose. “ The designs are being made according to the changes. The estimates will be reframed and submitted by December 31,” he said.
