600 cops to decide action plan today

Sources in the police department said more than 600 officers were directly affected by the notification issued late on Wednesday. “The officers met in Jalandhar today during the visit of the director general of police and have decided in principle to hold a meeting on Saturday to plan further course of action,” added an officer who did not wish to be named.

The state government has declared all notifications on seniority list issued earlier as null and void and the new list would mean direct promotions for directly recruited DSPs who would supersede their present seniors. Certain officers who had been promoted to IPS rank will have to come back to their original cadres.

“The government wants us to salute officers who were junior to us till yesterday. This will create ruckus in the state,” a senior officer told The Indian Express.

Senior officers affected by the new notification said they had met the deputy chief minister and the chief minister almost a fortnight ago. “However,despite assurances that the notification will wait till the Supreme Court approves or rejects the orders on the seniority list,the government went ahead and backstabbed us,” said one of them.

“The entire matter was brought to the notice of DGP P S Gill too,but to no avail. We know the entire list has been sanctioned by the government to help some blue-eyed officers and for these 58-odd officers the government is hell bent on ignoring the plight of 600 officers,” said another SP-rank officer.

While Gill denied to comment on the issue,a senior intelligence officer said: “The Supreme Court had ordered status quo on the high court’s orders regarding implementation of the PPS seniority list. I suppose these officers should wait till the next hearing in January.”
