As many as 60 students in six leading schools of Chandigarh have scored 100 out of 100 in the mathematics paper of the Central Bureau of School Educations Class X examinations,a 65 per cent improvement over last year.
A host of factors, say teachers, have ensured such a result. Now,there is more focus on the subject. Not long ago,it was the most dreaded subject, but teachers across the schools have gone out of their way to break a students discomfort with maths, says Sushma Pandhi,a mathematics teacher in Bhavan Vidyalaya in Sector 27. There are extra classes, workshops, question papers and additional books now to help them.
Fifteen out of 116 students of Pandhis school have scored full marks in the subject. Others include 18 students from Sacred Heart,15 from KBDAV School and nine from Carmel Convent.
B B Kalia, who teaches the subject at Carmel Convent, feels by giving 15 extra minutes before the exam, the CBSE has helped in easing the nerves of the students. Besides, the 20 marks allotted for internal assessment have helped them in scoring well.
But there is a word of caution. Students can become overconfident. There is a big chasm in the difficulty level of Class X maths and what students face in Class XI and XII, Kalia says. Moreover, there is no internal assessment after Class X.
