6 days before polls, security upped at PU

Campaigning to end 48 hours before voting

As the countdown to the student elections in Panjab University begins, the police and university authorities have tightened up security on the campus to ensure strict implementation of Lyngdoh guidelines.

While the nominations will be filed on Friday, the authorities have declared campaigning will be closed 48 hours before the voting day. Dean Student Welfare,Professor Navdeep Goyal said,“This is as per the revised guidelines for elections, but we might allow student organisations to do peaceful door-to door campaigning during that period.”

Meanwhile,as the issue of unauthorised entry of outsiders in the campus remains pertinent, the police have instructed wardens of all hostels to keep a constant check.Taking strict action in this direction, the police has told student leaders that unauthorised outsiders in the hostels will be arrested and produced before the Magistrate, unlike earlier when they were detained and let off after identification.

In another such step, the university has allotted specific time slots to all student organisations to campaign in all the girls’ and boys’ hostels. A time period of half an hour will be given to all organisations to visit each hostel in the evening, while only 6 members from each party, including 4 panel members and 2 other office bearers will be allowed to campaign at a time”.

“Only one party will be allowed in a hostel at a time to avoid chaos,” added Goyal.

Talking about the preparations,Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP),Ashish Kapoor said,“All arrangements have been done as per Lyngdoh guidelines, which we are going to implement strictly. The police presence in the university will be increased to ensure proper conduct of polls.” He added if any car without a sticker is found carrying party banners, its expenditure will also be counted in the party’s expenditure for elections.
