500 vehicles stolen in first 7 months of 2011

Over 500 motor vehicle thefts have taken place in different parts of the city in the first seven months of this year.

Police Division (South) reported 221 cases of vehicle theft till July ‘11,the highest in the UT

Over 500 motor vehicle thefts have taken place in different parts of the city in the first seven months of this year. The vehicles – both two and four wheelers – have been stolen from almost every sector of the city.

According to figures,out of 518 vehicle thefts,91 have taken place in Sector 34 police station followed by Sector 17 police station where 84 thefts of motor vehicles ranging from cars to motorbikes have taken place. Vehicle theft is not confined to any specific area in the city. Crime figures reveal that 44 vehicle thefts have taken place in the jurisdiction of Manimajra police station. Sector 39 police station Sector 39 had 53 motor vehicle thefts during the first seven months of the year. Industrial Area police station recorded 13 vehicle thefts,the lowest in the city.

Station House Officer of Sector 34 police station said,“The main reason for more number of vehicle thefts in my jurisdiction is that it borders Mohali. We have increased patrolling in the area,to ensure that vehicle thefts don’t happen. We have recovered many motor vehicles in the 91 cases reported.”

Like snatching incidents,the highest number of vehicle thefts have taken place in police division (South) which comprise of police stations in Sector 31,34,36 and 39. Police Division (South) reported 221 cases of vehicle theft in the first seven months of this year.

Police Division (Central) which comprises of police stations in Sector 3,11 and 17 reported 163 vehicle thefts. Police Division (East),which comprise of police stations in Sector 26,19,Industrial Area and Manimajra reported 134 cases of vehicle thefts.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (South) B S Negi said that they have recovered 35 percent of vehicles that were stolen this year. “We recently busted a gang of car lifters and recovered three cars from them.”
