(Representational Photo)Kamal Soi, a member of Centre’s National Road Safety Council on Friday said that as many as 5 lakh residents were waiting for their Driving Licence (DL) and Registration Certificate (RC) as Punjab’s Transport Department has not been able to provide these for last three months.
Addressing the media on Friday, he said with each passing day, a pendency of 10,000 was adding to the lot as the firm, to whom the government had outsourced the work of printing, has stopped working. He said M/s Smart Chip Private Limited stopped work in November last year due to issues related to the cost of printing RC and DL.

He said the department could not even put High Security Registration Number Plate on 40 lakh old vehicles. People are getting troubled but the department officials are sleeping. “In the light of the above, till the time a new vendor is selected post completion of tendering process, we request the Transport Department to award the contract of printing of Driving Licenses and Vehicle Registration Certificates in the Punjab to NICSI to correct the current anomalous situation ”, he added.
