The hostel accommodation in Panjab University still remains a distant dream for 100-odd students, who are still running from pillar to post to get a room in the university. Though students, mostly girls, were promised accommodation at the time of admission, four months into the new academic session has failed to generate a positive result.
According to the data available with the Students Council, over 100 girl students are yet to be accommodated in hostels.
Talking to Newsline,SOPU president Barinder Dhillon said,There are over 100 girls who still havent got the hostel facility. We have been trying hard but even after converting sports hostel into a girls hostel, all the girls could not be accommodated. We will submit a memorandum to the authorities asking them to get the pending hostel projects completed at the earliest.
Meanwhile, authorities have yet to add executive menu, which would be in addition to the existing menu in university hostels. Stray dogs in boys hostels and monkeys in girls hostels too have compounded the problems of hostellers.
While students have started preferring outside accommodation, authorities are seemingly doing nothing to address the issue of university students. Hostel number 5 warden Gurmeet Singh said,Authorities are trying their best to accommodate students. Renovation work is being carried out besides adding new floors where ever it is possible. We hope to solve the problem by the next academic session.
