Amidst the beating of drums and sloganeering,the candidates for the elections to the Municipal Corporation (MC) filed their nominations at different locations in the city. The atmosphere outside the offices of the returning officers was festive with supporters waving party flags backing candidates as they filed their papers.
A total of 232 candidates have filed nominations. This includes covering candidates as well as candidates who filed multiple forms. The scrutiny of nominations is on November 29 and the last date of withdrawal is December 2. Thereafter,the final list of candidates would be clear.
The nominations for different wards were to be filed with the designated returning officers. A total of seven returning officers were designated for the purpose. The candidates for maximum number of wards,a total of seven,were accommodated at the Estate Office Sector 17 with two returning officers present here. There was a steady stream of candidates and supporters that could be seen here till afternoon. It was a show of strength prior to the elections.
The other places where the nominations were filed included office of Director Public Instructions (Schools),Chandigarh Housing Board,District Industries Centre at Industrial Area Phase II,Secretariat Sector 9 and Museum and Art Gallery Sector 10. Most candidates collected supporters at their wards from where the processions reached the office where nomination was to be filed.
Rows of vehicles with the party flags followed the candidates. Apart from four-wheelers that were put into action,auto-rickshaws with party flags were also seen present. In fact,throughout the city party workers could be seen moving around. At places,senior party leaders accompanied the contestants who are entering the field for the first time.
While some of the Congress and BSP candidates had filed their nomination on Friday and Saturday,all the BJP candidates filed their nominations today. Members of the Chandigarh Jan Manch filed their papers,apart from the independents and associations.
