Little did the duo realise that their racing competition will land them in trouble after one of the cars landed in an empty pond at the Panjab University on Tuesday even as the onlookers hearts skipped a beat. The accident happened when two students of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) tried to outrace each other on the road leading from the varsity gate number one to the administration block, injuring a motorist in the process.
Amiteshwar of third year was driving Innova car while Gurvir Mahal of second year was driving a Honda Civic. They both got into a race. However,Gurvir lost control of her car.
After hitting an electricity pole and flower pots, her car entered the herbal garden opposite the administration block, and landed in the pond.
A senior PU security officer said the girl lost control of her car after which it rammed into the pole and got stuck in the pond. Though both the students were safe, the biker,Raj,got injured. He had come to the varsity to meet one of his friends staying in the hostel. People rushed Raj to PGI. He suffered minor injuries.
Had there been speed breakers, the accident could have been averted. A few years back, the PU authorities had installed speed breakers but they were removed after the student outfits staged protests, the security officer added.
Though the cops of Sector 11 police station impounded both the cars, they released the vehicles after both the parities reached a compromise.
