100 schoolchildren mark Wetland Day

The Environment Society of India celebrated the World Wetland Day today at the regulator end of Sukhna Lake.

The Environment Society of India celebrated the World Wetland Day today at the regulator end of Sukhna Lake. Around 100 students from Moti Ram Senior Secondary School Sector 7 Panchkula ,Shastri Model School Mohali and Government Model High School Sector 11 Chandigarh along with their teachers took part in the celebrations.

Speaking on the occasion S K Sharma President Environment Society of India said,“ Kanjli,Ropar,the Sukhna Lake area,Bhinderwas in Rohtak district are among the best wetland areas in our region.” He added that these areas are very useful for irrigation,natural vegetation,animal and bird habitat so these areas need to be preserved.

The Deputy Inspector General Panckula R C Mishra presided as the chief guest at the celebrations. Mishra told the students that,“ The last 100 years of industrialization and development have led to the depletion of natural resources and habitats. At such a rate of development,the birds and animals would get extinct in the next ten years.” He further said that water and vegetation were essential for the conservation of wetlands and children should spread the message around.

A painting competition and word identification quiz were also organized on the occasion. The children painted beautiful birds and scenic paintings and were adjudged first second and third. Seema,a student from one of the schools said,“ This is a very enriching experience. We should preserve our resources for the future generations and we should not destroy the habitat of these birds and water animals by polluting the water.”

Tricity team wins prize for R-Day

A contingent of children trained by North Zone Cultural Centre has won the first prize in school children presentations made in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. More than 160 students had performed Bhangra. The students belonged to Paragon School,Mohali and five Government Model Senior Schools of Chandigarh including those in Sectors 16,10,15,30 and Manimajra. The trophy was presented by Defence Minister A K Antony in New Delhi. Saroya informed that it was for the first time in the last 25 years that children’s contingent trained by NZCC has won the first prize at the Republic Day function.
