As the first evacuation flight carrying 360 Indians took off from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia for New Delhi Wednesday as part of Operation Kaveri, the Gujarat government stated that it was “committed to joining hands with the Central government in ensuring the safe evacuation of the residents of Gujarat” from the conflict-torn Sudan.

The first flight with nearly 30 residents of Gujarat landed late Wednesday evening in New Delhi. Anand native Chirag Patel, who was evacuated from Port Sudan Tuesday and was awaiting his evacuation from Jeddah, told The Indian Express, “The first evacuation flight took off from Jeddah to New Delhi with families, women and children on priority. There were 30 Gujaratis on board this flight… The second evacuation flight will take off late Wednesday night and will be Mumbai-bound, we have been told. I have registered for the flight and the details of the take-off will be notified shortly.”

The release stated that in the first phase, about 38 Non-Resident Gujaratis would be evacuated by special flights from Jeddah to New Delhi and Mumbai. “Additionally, in the upcoming special evacuation flights to Mumbai and New Delhi, more Gujaratis will also be safely brought back to India… The state government is in constant coordination with the MEA to ensure this process. Not only this, the Gujarat government is also committed to safely bringing back the residents from New Delhi and Mumbai to their native places in Gujarat.”

Chirag added that several other Indians, including Gujarat natives, are still stranded in Sudan and being evacuated on naval ships from Port Sudan to Jeddah. “More people will arrive in Jeddah and thereafter, more flights will also take off, we have been told. During our wait in Jeddah, the Embassy has taken good care of us right from our meals to our stay, and also assured us about our safe return. We feel relieved,” Patel said.
