Days after former Karnataka chief minister Kumaraswamy was accused of and “admitted” to having illegally drawn power to light up his Bengaluru home during Diwali, posters have surfaced mocking the JD(S) leader as a “current thief”.

On Wednesday morning, some posters appeared near his home claiming that Kumaraswamy was an electricity thief. One of the posters said one “will have to appreciate his honesty even after stealing electricity”–a reference to his admission that power was indeed drawn illegally from an electric pole. Police who received information about the posters removed them.

The ruling Congress wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “The only honest person in the world, H D Kumaraswamy, had his JP Nagar residence illuminated with decorative lights using an illegal power connection directly from the electric pole. It is a tragedy that such poverty has led a former CM to resort to stealing electricity!”

Kumaraswamy has said it was a private decorator who drew power directly from a nearby electricity pole. “I realised this when I returned home and immediately removed it and ensured that power was drawn from the house connection. Let Bescom officials inspect this and issue a notice. I am ready to pay the fine. The Congress is blowing up the issue for cheap publicity. I sympathise with their cheap mindset,” he said in the wake of the controversy.

The vigilance wing of Bescom (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company) has conducted an inspection and registered a case of electricity theft under section 135 of the Indian Electricity Act.

Videos of an illegal power connection being used to illuminate the former chief minister’s home were shared on social media.
