Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Monday deferred the implementation of overstay charges for vehicles at Terminals 1 and 2 of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in view of the nationwide disruptions in flight operations triggered by the Indigo crisis.

BIAL had announced that it would charge vehicles that stay at the designated zones at the terminals for more than eight minutes. The new rule was supposed to take effect on Monday. “The airport will give eight minutes (much higher than international standards) of free use of the zone for all users, beyond which Rs 150 will be charged for overstay from 8-13 minutes and Rs 300 for 13-18 minutes,” it had said.
BIAL had also said that any vehicle that stays beyond eight minutes would be towed to the nearest police station and that the vehicle’s owners would have to pay fines and towing charges.

BIAL said in a statement on Monday, “In consultation with relevant authorities, Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) will now implement overstay charges at the arrival kerbsides of Terminal 1 and 2 a couple of days later than planned. We intend to wait for the recent disruptions in flight operations across the country to stabilise, which we expect to happen in a day or two. The new measures, aimed at improving the landside experience at BLR Airport, will be introduced as planned at T1 and T2 arrival kerbsides. The revised effective date for implementation will be communicated within the next day or so.”

On Monday, 65 flights that were supposed to arrive at KIA were cancelled, as were 62 departure flights.
