A six-month-old mystery around the disappearance of a 26-year-old woman in Karnataka’s Gadag district was unearthed with the arrest of her 28-year-old boyfriend on Sunday on charges of murder, police said.

The police said Satish Hiremath, a petrol station worker from Narayanapura village, murdered Madhushree Angadi and buried her body near a stream.

The couple’s relationship had lasted nearly six years before Angadi’s family discovered it and relocated her to her relatives’ house in Gadag town. On December 16, 2024, she left her relatives’ house and vanished without a trace. But her disappearance was not officially reported until January 12, 2025, when her family members filed a missing-person complaint at the Betageri police station.

Police investigations revealed that Hiremath had taken Angadi to a farmhouse near their village on the night she disappeared. According to the police, a heated argument erupted when she insisted that he marry her. In a moment of uncontrolled rage, Hiremath allegedly strangled her with a veil before burying her remains near a stream.

Following the murder, Hiremath maintained his normal routine, continuing work at the petrol station while fabricating a story about dropping Angadi on the Gadag town’s outskirts. He claimed this was their last interaction and denied knowledge of her subsequent whereabouts.

However, technological evidence ultimately exposed his deception, according to the police. “A message ping from her phone placed her at a location that did not align with Satish’s version of events,” said B S Namegouda, Superintendent of Police, Gadag.

When confronted with this contradictory evidence, Hiremath eventually broke down and confessed to the crime, the police said. He subsequently led officers to the burial site where skeletal remains were recovered, though Angadi’s skull remains missing. Forensic experts are conducting tests to confirm the body’s identity and establish the exact cause of death.

The police plan to seek Hiremath’s custody for further investigation, including efforts to recover additional evidence.

“He buried the body in a manner he believed would never be discovered,” Namegouda stated. “Initially, we considered the possibility of elopement. But when neither could be traced and there was no digital activity, suspicions grew. The persistent investigation ultimately cracked the case,” he added.
