Karnataka HC judges get death threats; sender wants Rs 50 lakh deposited in Pakistan bank

The court’s public relations officer says he received the threat message on WhatsApp on July 12.

The cybercrime police in Bengaluru have registered a case after an employee of the Karnataka High Court received a message where the unknown sender threatened to kill four current and two former judges of the court.

The court’s public relations officer, K Muralidhar, stated in his complaint that he received the threat message on WhatsApp. The sender also demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh and wanted it to be deposited in an account with Allied Bank Limited in Pakistan.

According to the complaint, Muralidhar received the message around 7 pm on July 12 on his official mobile number. The sender threatened that if the money was not transferred, he would kill Justices Mohammad Nawaz, H T Narendra Prasad, H P Sandesh and K Natarajan as well as former judges Ashok G Nijagannavar and B Veerappa.

The sender also said he was part of a “Dubai gang” and messaged the complainant from multiple numbers. “Yah Indian Hamare Aapke Shooter Hain,” the sender wrote, according to the complainant.

On July 14, the Central CEN police registered a case under Information Technology Act sections 75 (offence or contravention committed outside India) and 66F (cyber terrorism) as well as Indian Penal Code sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace). An officer said the police were yet to make any arrest.
