As temperatures soar, IMD issues heatwave warning for coastal Karnataka
People exposed to the sun for extended periods or engaged in heavy work are more likely to experience symptoms of illness, as per an IMD warning.

(File Photo)The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Wednesday issued a heatwave warning for coastal Karnataka districts for the next two days.
“Due to the increase of relative humidity between (40-50 per cent) and maximum Air temperature in the range of 37-39 degrees Celsius over coastal Karnataka, the human body perceives the maximum temperature in the range between 40-50 degrees Celsius,” an impact-based forecast and warning issued by the IMD said.
Due to the prevailing conditions, there is an increased likelihood of illness symptoms in people exposed to the sun for a prolonged period or doing heavy work. “High health concern for vulnerable people” such as infants, elderly and those with chronic diseases, the weather warning said.
Heatwave conditions have prevailed in the coastal region for the past couple of days, with IMD issuing a yellow alert. According to temperature readings by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, parts of Dakshina Kannada district in the coastal region recorded a maximum temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius Tuesday, with other two coastal districts, Uttara Kannada and Udupi, recording a maximum of 35.8 and 36.2 degree Celsius, respectively.
Temperatures hovered close to the mid-30s in Malnad districts, too, a region which enjoys a milder climate than other parts of the state. In Bengaluru Urban, the highest temperature recorded was 33 degrees Celsius.
