An unknown miscreant cut off the teats of two cows and injured another cow in the leg in the Vinayaknagar area of Bengaluru Sunday morning.

The three cows belonging to milk vendor Karna were tied in the open near his residence. He told reporters that the incident took place during the early hours as the cows were bleeding at their udders when he woke up to milk them.

Karna suspected that the incident could be linked to a protest held six months ago when he and other local milk vendors had protested against the decision to shift a veterinary hospital located nearby. “We have been selling milk for more than three decades,” he said, adding that such an incident was unprecedented.

According to sources in Cottonpet police station, where a complaint was registered, one person was responsible for the incident. “We are currently tracking the suspect and an arrest will be made soon. We are currently verifying footage from nearby CCTVs,” a police officer said.

BJP leaders have demanded strict action against the culprits for the incident. Leader of Opposition R Ashok, who visited the spot on Sunday morning, said they would observe a ‘black Sankranti’ if “the government did not initiate strict action against the jihadis who cut the cows’ udder.”

Ashok alleged that the attack on the cows was linked to an “attempt to transfer the veterinary hospital land to Waqf Board” a few months ago. There were protests held then and these animals were exhibited. “Due to the same reason, the udders were cut off using machetes and daggers,” he said.

Reacting to the incident, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he spoke to the police commissioner and asked him to initiate action against the culprits. “Whoever is responsible, we will make sure action is taken as per law,” he added.
