Centre appoints Maheshwar Rao as Bangalore Metro’s full-time managing director

A full-time MD for BMRCL has been a long-standing demand since former MD Anjum Parvez was made the additional chief secretary of rural development last year.

Bangalore metroBMRCL recently reached a new milestone when it recorded a whopping 2 crore ridership in December 2023—around 6.8 lakh passengers on an average daily—fetching a fare revenue of Rs 55 crore.

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs appointed Maheshwar Rao as the full-time managing director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Thursday. An order from the ministry states that the managing director will not be given any other or additional assignment by the Karnataka government without its consent.

Since former MD Anjum Parvez was given the charge of the additional chief secretary of rural development and panchayat raj last year, the appointment of a full-time MD for BMRCL has been a long-standing demand of mobility activists, especially given that major metro works are to be completed on a war footing in order to decongest Bengaluru traffic, reduce vehicle pollution and boost public transport.

Rao has served as the commissioner of industrial development and director of industries and commerce. He has also served as the deputy commissioner and district magistrate in Dakshina Kannada and Mandya districts. According to his LinkedIn profile, the 1995-batch IAS officer holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of Hyderabad.

BMRCL recently reached a new milestone when it recorded a whopping 2 crore ridership in December 2023—around 6.8 lakh passengers on an average daily—fetching a fare revenue of Rs 55 crore. The boost in ridership came after BMRCL opened the missing link between Baiyappanahalli and KR Puram, which increased the ridership from 6.4 lakh in October to 6.6 lakh in November last year.

Bengaluru’s metro network spans 73.81 km with phase 1 connecting Kadugodi and Challaghatta (East-West corridor) with Silk Institute and Nagasandra (South-North corridor). The ongoing metro projects include phase 2B connecting KR Pura with Kempegowda International Airport Terminal (38 km), phase 2B connecting Central Silk Board with KR Pura (19 km) and phase 2 involving the extension from Nagasandra to Madavara (BIEC)—connecting Bommasandra and RV Road with Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara—which will amount to 43 km.

In addition, the state government has also approved phase 3A connecting Hebbal to JP Nagar 4th phase and Hosahalli to Kadabagere, which covers a distance of 43 km. Further, the government has also approved phase 3B connecting Sarjapur with Hebbal, which covers 36 km.
