Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya’s assets grew 30-fold during his first term as legislator, the affidavit documents he filed on Thursday ahead of the Lok Sabha elections have revealed.

In 2019, when Surya filed his nomination papers to contest his maiden election on a BJP ticket, he had declared total assets of Rs 13.46 lakh. Five years later, the total value of assets of the MP, who is also the president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing, is Rs 4.10 crore.

The prime sources of income growth, according to Surya’s affidavit, were investments in mutual funds and shares. Surya has invested Rs 1.99 crore in mutual funds and Rs 1.79 crore in shares.

He has three cases pending against him, two of which were filed during the recent BJP protest at Nagarathpete in Bengaluru in March. The two cases are booked under sections related to promoting enmity between classes, unlawful assembly and others. The third case was booked at Civil Lines Police Station, New Delhi, in March 2022 under various sections including voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant, after BJYM workers stormed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence.

Shobha Karandlaje files nomination, declares money laundering case against her

Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and BJP’s Bengaluru North candidate Shobha Karandlaje filed her nomination on Wednesday where she declared a money laundering case registered against her. The complaint was filed by the Enforcement Directorate in 2014 against which she had filed a writ petition challenging the proceedings and sought that the complaint be quashed.

Karandlaje has four other complaints in her name, of which two are in connection with “inflammatory speech and scandalous allegations against particular state”. The complaints – one in Bengaluru and another at Madurai in Tamil Nadu – were filed following her controversial remarks in March where she alleged that the Rameshwaram Cafe bomber was trained in Tamil Nadu.

A complaint was also filed against Karandlaje in Kerala in 2020 for “alleged inflammatory speech” and another in 2021 for alleged defamation of Sowmya Reddy, who is the Congress candidate from Bangalore South in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
