BJP MLCs demand withdrawal of land allocated to Infosys citing Hubballi campus delay

When Industries Minister M B Patil says Infosys has started work, Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti disagrees, saying the government shouldn’t take the issue lightly just because the IT giant is influential.

Infosys came under fire from Karnataka’s Opposition legislators and Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti on Tuesday over the delay in opening its Hubballi campus, with some of them demanding the government withdraw the land allocated to the software giant.

During a discussion in the Council on the recent Global Investors Meet, BJP MLC S V Sankanur complained that Infosys was allocated around 50 acres of land in Hubballi after acquiring it from farmers. “The company has not even utilised half of the land allocated to it. Why is the state government silent on this?” he asked.

Seeking a response from Industries Minister M B Patil on when Infosys would fully operationalise its campus and provide jobs to locals, Sankanur suggested the land be withdrawn if the company was not interested in developing its unit at Hubballi.

BJP MLCs such as Pradeep Shettar said that despite the issue being highlighted in the legislature in 2024, there had been no progress in developing the Hubballi campus.

Patil said that Infosys had already started work on the project. “After the discussion on the delay in opening their campus at Hubballi in the legislature last year, a delegation from the company met me personally and discussed various issues regarding the Hubballi campus. They have started work,” he said.

Horatti, who also hails from Hubballi, disagreed with the minister. “The company has not done anything at Hubballi. You need not lie to the House,” he told Patil, adding that the government should not take the issue lightly just because the company was influential.

Another BJP MLC, Pradeep Shettar, alleged that Infosys had only done landscaping on the land. “If the company has no interest in developing its campus, they can return the land to the state government,” he said.

Patil later assured the Council that he would soon hold a meeting with Infosys officials over the issue.
