A 40-year-old Bengaluru woman recently approached a doctor asking him to suggest pills to kill her mother-in-law. But when the police summoned the woman, she claimed that she had sought the suggestion to die by suicide. The incident was reported earlier this week, after the woman messaged Dr Sunil Kumar, who resides in Bengaluru’s Sanjay Nagar, on WhatsApp at 2.10 am on Monday.

According to the police, the woman asked Dr Kumar about medication to slow poison her 70-year-old mother-in-law. The doctor refused and the woman deleted all the messages. But by then, Dr Kumar had taken screenshots of the conversation and informed the police on Tuesday. Speaking to the media, Dr Kumar said the experience was shocking, and at the same time it also pained him to see people seeking such help. “I told her that a doctor’s job is to save lives and not to take them,” he added. The Sanjay Nagar police traced the woman and she was summoned to appear before them.

A police officer said: “She came with her husband and informed us that she got the contact number of the doctor online. She said she wanted to kill herself and not her mother-in-law. She claimed that she told the doctor about her mother-in-law hoping to get a suggestion.”

Married to a driver, the woman has a minor daughter. The police have continued the investigation and taken a written statement from the woman.
