92 Bengaluru roads dropped from white-topping project as Karnataka govt withdraws tenders
The Cabinet also cleared a proposal to increase the borrowing limit of Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board from the existing Rs 500 crore to Rs 5,000 crore.
Bengaluru is seeing 28,741 acres of land being acquired to develop 24 industrial areas. (Express File/Representative Photo) The Karnataka government Thursday decided to drop 92 roads from the third phase of the white-topping project in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister H K Patil told a news conference following a Cabinet meeting: “Work on these roads were not started for many reasons.”
The total cost for white-topping, or resurfacing these 92 asphalt roads with concrete, under the project was estimated at Rs 1,172 crore.
The minister said the Cabinet decided to withdraw the tenders floated for package two and six, under phase three of the project.
Project to white-top 150 roads
White-topping has been undertaken under various phases by the BBMP in the city for the past several years. Last year, BBMP launched a project to white-top around 150 roads in the city.
In another decision, the Cabinet cleared a proposal to increase the borrowing limit of Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board from the existing Rs 500 crore to Rs 5,000 crore with the government as guarantor.
Patil said the borrowing will be used to develop more industrial areas and pay compensation for the land acquired.
According to a note issued by the minister’s office, 28,741 acres of land was being acquired to develop 24 industrial areas in the city. The total cost of land acquisition is Rs 26,505 crore and developing the areas is Rs 5,875 crore, it said.
