A 23-year-old pedestrian suffered severe injuries in Bengaluru as an electric pole collapsed on him after optical fiber cables precariously hanging from it became entangled with a passing truck. The incident on Kariyammana Agrahara Main Road, close to Devarabeesanahalli, took place on August 19.

The injured pedestrian has been identified as Kevin Varghese, a multinational company staffer hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He is under critical care at a private hospital, even though he escaped electrocution.

According to the Old Airport traffic police, the dangling cables were the property of Tata and Reliance Jio telecom companies. These cables became entangled by an unidentified truck passing by. As the vehicle was moving at a considerable speed, the wires dragged the electric pole, leading to its collapse onto Varghese.

As the driver of the truck fled the scene near the Royal Enfield showroom, passersby transported Varghese to a nearby hospital.

A case has been registered following a complaint from Mahadevappa M C, an assistant engineer at Bescom. Police have booked a case under sections 279 (reckless driving), 283 (endangering public safety) and 337 (causing harm through dangerous actions) of the Indian Penal Code.

N Yamuna, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s chief engineer (OFC), did not immediately respond to the calls made and messages sent by indianexpress.com.

It may be recalled that in 2021, the Karnataka High Court directed the civic body to remove all illegal cables in the state capital.
