Bengaluru Metro likely to commission BIEC-Nagasandra stretch by August-end

The Bengaluru Metro stretch, which was set to be commissioned by 2020, encountered multiple hiccups including the Covid pandemic.

Bengaluru MetroAccording to BMRCL officials, several civil and technical works need to be completed before starting operations.

Bengaluru Metropolitan Rail Corporation Limited is likely to commission the 3.7-km stretch between the Madavara (BIEC) and Nagasandra metro stations by the end of August. A part of the north-south green corridor, this stretch has three stations—Manjunatha Nagar, Chikkabidarakallu and Madavara.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 298 crore, the extension serves as an important connectivity link to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) located on Tumkur Road. It hosts premier exhibitions, conferences and other events of international acclaim.

The stretch, which was set to be commissioned by 2020, encountered multiple hiccups including the Covid pandemic, the contractor not supplying raw materials leading to cancellation of the contract and the permission from Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises to allow BMRCL to pass the viaduct over NICE Road, among others.

According to BMRCL officials, several civil and technical works need to be completed before starting operations. The BIEC authorities have requested BMRCL to provide an entry/exit to the BIEC ground, and the work is still underway.

Further, work on the auxiliary substation or transformer substation room needs to be expedited, a BMRCL official said.

BMRCL has also fixed June 2024 as a deadline to complete the architectural finishing work of all the stations along the extended stretch. The debris on the track should be removed for laying cables and BMRCL is likely to complete the track work by May 30.

“In addition, works like signalling, traction, cable trough, electrical and mechanical works are pending,” a BMRCL official said.
