The Bengaluru police on Saturday detained the manager and five staff members of a hotel after an alleged derogatory message targeting Kannadigas appeared on a digital display on its premises.

The police also filed a suo motu First Information Report (FIR) after the message was displayed on the display at G S Suites in Koramangala, opposite to Nexus Mall, in southeast Bengaluru.

The FIR was filed under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with promoting enmity on the basis of religion, race, language, place of birth, and other grounds.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Sarah Fathima confirmed the development and said the hotel’s manager has been detained. The hotel owner, who is currently abroad, has also been named in the FIR.

An investigation has been launched, and staff members have been questioned. Authorities plan to issue notices to individuals linked to the incident. Initial findings suggest that the hotel had raised concerns with the display board manufacturer in Koramangala after noticing irregular messages being shown after May 8.

Officials summoned representatives from the company responsible for the board to understand its functioning. Preliminary inquiries revealed the contract for the board was signed three years ago, but it remains unclear how the offensive message was displayed. A detailed investigation is underway, with electronic evidence expected to shed more light.

The incident gained public attention on Saturday morning after several users posted about it on X. The video capturing the message was reportedly shot on Friday night outside the hotel.
