Widespread rain, strong winds in state; to continue till June 8

Several trees were uprooted, hoardings were damaged and various parts of the city experienced waterlogging as Ahmedabad woke up to high-velocity winds accompanied by rain Sunday morning.

For Monday, the weather department has issued a forecast of “light thunderstorm with lightning and surface wind 30- 40 kmph (in gust) accompanied with light to moderate rain in the district of North Gujarat Banaskantha and Sabarkantha along with strong surface winds 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph” over Gujarat.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bhavnagar, Vadodara and Surat experienced the highest wind velocity of 28 kmph in the morning followed by Ahmedabad and Bhuj at 22 kmph and Porbandar 16 kmph.

In the evening, the weather department issued a warning against strong surface winds of 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph very likely to prevail across Gujarat till June 8.

Also, a fishermen warning has been issued by the weather department advising them not to venture along and off the North Gujarat coast from June 4 till June 8.

A heritage building in Taliya ni pol, Nano Porwad in the walled city area of Sarangpur in Ahmedabad collapsed due to the rain Sunday morning, but there was no casualty.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) central control room received complaints of water-logging at 61 places and the uprooting of trees at 25 locations across the city. As the rain stopped by noon, AMC authorities cleared these areas.

On Sunday, the city received an average rainfall of 24 mm with South zone recording the highest of 43.75 mm, followed by East zone 40.59 mm, North zone 39 mm, South-west zone 18.76 mm, central zone 17 mm, West zone 10.25 mm and Northwest zone 8 mm.

Areas such as Maninagar in the South zone recorded the highest of 46 mm, followed by Viratnagar in the East zone that received 44 mm and Ramol 42.5 mm. Other areas that received rainfall were Kathwada and Nikol 40 mm, Odhav 38.5 mm and Naroda 38 mm.

In the state, 131 talukas received rainfall Sunday evening with Mehmdabad in Kheda district recording the highest of 55 mm followed by Lunawada in Mahisagar 53 mm, Nadiad in Kheda 44 mm, Netrang in Bharuch 44 mm, Lakhani in Banaskantha 40 mm, Balasinor in Mahisagar 40 mm, Modasa in Aravalli 35 mm, Valiya in Bharuch 33 mm, Anand and Jambughoda in Panchmahal 32 mm.
