The unrest over the suspension of seven students of M S University,including three girls,continued for the second day on Friday. Fourteen students,including five girls,were arrested,even as educational activities remained partially affected in response to a bandh call given by student unions.
Around 50 girl inmates of HM Hall Hostel had stormed the office of Chief Warden Dinesh Kanchan and allegedly resorted to vandalism on Thursday. They were reportedly joined by members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) who allegedly broke computers and destroyed university properties,following which they were detained,and later arrested by the Sayajigunj police.
The students said they had been demanding proper security arrangements at the hostel after miscreants entered the compound twice in the last three months,but the university authorities did not take any steps. They alleged their representation before the chief warden over poor living conditions and security issues remained unheard,following which they took to protest.
We made a representation before the vice-chancellor (Yogesh Singh) for suspending girl students for their genuine concerns regarding security and poor living conditions at the hostel,but he does not seem to be in a mood of listening to anybody, said Vadodara Youth Congress president Rutvij Joshi.
All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) members said they have approached the National Commission for Women over the way the girl students were treated.
The university authorities,meanwhile,have constituted a panel to inquire into the incident. We have instituted a two-member team though there are no reports of any violence. Only some classes were affected as students did not turn up, said Amit Dholakia,director,Communication Cell,MSU.
