Ltd of Vapi GIDC has been slapped a closure notice by the local factory inspector after preliminary investigations. A complaint has been registered at the Vapi GIDC police station.

The incident took place when labourers in the factory located in Phase-I of Vapi GIDC were replacing an empty chlorine gas turner with a filled one weighing 900 kg to the feeder. While they were fitting the valve, gas started leaking through a fissure in the copper tube. The room was evacuated and company authorities sent an expert with a breathing apparatus to close the valve attached to the feeder. However, the leaking gas soon spread in the entire room and then later started gushing out the factory. A labourer was affected and was rushed to hospital. His condition is reported to be stable now.

A while later, the leaking chlorine gas spread into the neighbouring paper factory, affecting over 18 labourers there. They were rushed to Haria Hospital. Another 15 people were affected in the neighbouring Sulpad village, among them five minors, including a nine-month-old child.

Doctors at Haria Hospital said those affected complained of breathing problems, vomiting and loose motion but their condition was stable now.

Following the incident, officials from Gujarat Pollution Control Board and the local factory inspector visited the site for inspection and probe.

Later, the manager of the paper factory filed a complaint of negligence at the Vapi GIDC police station against Makwell Plasticizer Pvt. Ltd.
