Rain lashes Gujarat University campus in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. (Express Photo by Nirmal Harindran)The Southwest Monsoon was “vigorous” in Gujarat, with widespread rain in Saurashtra in the last 24 hours ending Tuesday morning at 6 am, the India Meteorological Department said Tuesday.
According to data from the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) Gandhinagar, 143 talukas of the total 251 in the state received significant rainfall from 6am on Monday onwards. Vanthali of Junagadh district recorded 14-inch rainfall while Visavadar and Junagadh city 13 and 12 inches, respectively. As many as 32 talukas received at least four inches of rainfall, with a few receiving nine and eight inches.
Furthermore, from 10 am to 2 pm on Tuesday, Lakhani in Banaskantha received 204 mm of rainfall. Other areas of Vav and Suigam in Banaskantha recorded 79 mm and 68 mm of rainfall respectively.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Tuesday for districts of Surat, Navsari, Valsad and an orange alert for some districts of Saurashtra, namely Surendranagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Dwarka, Gir Somnath and Kutch. An orange alert was also issued for the same day in Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Dahod, Mahisagar, Chhota Udepur, Bharuch, Dang and Tapi.

The districts of Banaskantha, Surat, Navsari and Valsad are also predicted to have very heavy rains on Wednesday, with the IMD issuing another orange alert for this.
The total average rainfall of the current season in the state has been recorded as 17.85 per cent, with 28.82 per cent in Saurashtra zone, 25.10 per cent in Kutch, 10.96 per cent in East-Central zone and 7.16 per cent in North Gujarat.
