‘Simple solutions can reduce carbon emissions’

Paresh Patel,a young farmer from Dhantej village, about 70 km from Vadodara, feels that instead of giving carbon credits to industrialists, farmers should be made the real beneficiaries.

Patel (29),could not continue his education beyond Class XII due to financial problems. But today,he has his own microscope and a small room to conduct scientific experiments in a typical village house in Dhantej.

He says it is the waste from different farm crops in dry form, which accounts for the maximum carbon emissions. If this waste is buried in at least 100-foot-deep pits, the carbon emission would reduce to a great extent.

He says: “Instead of giving money to industrialists as carbon credits, farmers should be given the same in the form of natural fertiliser.”

He adds: “Farmers across the globe keep some stock of farm waste for fuel and torch the rest. This results in carbon emission. In effect,a plant which actually helps in reducing carbon levels eventually becomes a source of adding to the emissions. Farmers across the globe burn their farm waste, grass and other shrubs.”

He says this practice made him think of a way to bury the carbon back in the soil.

“The government has thousands of acres of wasteland where these farm wastes can be buried. The Centre is already spending crores of rupees on NREGA and if farmers are given an alternative, the experiment would not even require extra investment,” he says.

As to why he does not implement the same in his own farm,he says,“I would love to do it,but my farm is close to the Narmada canal and has has high water content. Besides,I am financially not well-off to dig 100-foot-deep pits. This project has to be supported by the government.”

He further says,“I could not continue my study because of poor financial condition but my education has not stopped. I keep reading, buy chemicals and conduct experiments.”
