A priest from Radhanpur in Patan district has filed a defamation suit against Union Home Minister P Chidambaram for using the words saffron terrorism.
The Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court has kept the complaint for verification on September 6.
The complainant has sought appropriate action against Chidambaram under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
In his complainant,Swami Nityanand Tirth, who runs an ashram in Radhanpur town, has referred to Chidambaram’s August 25 address to the heads of police of all the states in which the minister reportedly said the involvement of saffron terrorism has been uncovered in a number of bomb blasts in the country.
Nityanand Tirth has stated that the saffron colour is associated with the saints in India and by equating it to terrorism,Chidambaram has defamed all the sadhus and saints in the country, including him (Nityanand Tirth).
He said the saffron colour has also been associated with personalities like Swami Vivekanand and Swami Dayanand Saraswati.
The petitioner lawyer,Virat Popat, refused to comment saying the matter is sub judice.
