An unidentified man driving a sedan hit several people and vehicles on Shyamal-Anand Nagar Road in Ahmedabad on Monday night and absconded after he was taken for treatment as he too was injured in the accident, the police said.
According to an N division traffic police official, where the FIR was lodged against the unknown driver later on Monday, the driver was “driving recklessly”. “He was taken for treatment through 108 emergency ambulance service but he absconded without getting the treatment,” the official said.
When the police contacted the registered owner of the Volvo car that caused the accident, they were told that the car was sold to another person two years ago. That buyer also reportedly sold the car to someone else. “We are still searching for the driver and he was not a minor. We have yet to ascertain whether he was inebriated,” a police official said.
The FIR filed by one of the injured, whose two-wheeler was also hit by the car, stated, “At around 7.20 pm, I was on my Activa passing through Jain dairy in Anand Nagar, when a car was being driven recklessly, hitting vehicles on its way. It also hit an Activa parked on its side. Then it hit my vehicle while I was on it, causing me to fall down, injuring my knees. The car still did not stop and hit a motorcycle on its side, and a few more people on the road.”
“The witnesses on the road shouted at the driver to get out of the car, but he did not. Then someone called the police control after which the police came and got him down. He was injured too, and was sent for treatment through 108 emergency ambulance service,” the FIR added.
The driver has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code, and sections 177, 184 and 184 (3) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
