PM becomes Singham for foreigners: Modi

Continuing his tirade against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for allowing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail,Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called him “Singham” — a tough cop played by Ajay Devgn in a movie — for foreigners.

Addressing a gathering during his Swami Vivekananda Yuva Vikas Yatra at Karjan in central Gujarat,Modi said the PM remembers the “coalition dharma” when asked to probe alleged corruption in his government, but shows courage when it comes to taking decisions that help foreigners.

“The first time he showed courage (in last eight years) was while signing a nuclear treaty with America. He then said,‘Let my government go and whether allies agree or not,I will sign this treaty’. And the media made him Singham,” Modi said.

“What is the reason that when it comes to joining hands with foreigners, you leave your (coalition) friends to become Singham?” he added.

In Bhavnagar, where he addressed the first Swami Vivekanand Yuva Parishad,Modi called the PM a weakling.

“Can the prime minister tell us which bone in his body is capable of putting up a fight?” he said, adding,“Unhone kaha ki ab to ‘main ladte ladte marunga’. Par unki koi haddi nahi jo lad sake. Unhe kehna chahiya ki ‘marte marte ladunga. (He said he will go down fighting. But he is spineless. Instead,he should say he will fight while dying).”

Attacking UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s foreign roots,he said,“Mr PM,I want to ask you as to how many of those businessmen coming from abroad are from Italy? How much FDI is coming from Italy? In how many cities are people from Italy putting up their shops? How many people from Italy are getting job in India?” he said.

He reiterated that the FDI move was “anti-local businessmen”. “Now,instead of the local kiranawala, multinationals will sell you daal and rice. This will result in many local people losing their bread and butter,” Modi said.
