People for Better Treatment (PBT),a body for ensuring ethics in medicine, has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) before Gujarat High Court against Gujarat University Chancellor as well as Dr Ketan Desai, former chairman of Medical Council of India.

Calling Desai’s election as GU Senate member as illegal,it has sought his removal from that post.

PBT has also sought a directive against the University Chancellor, the appropriate authority,to take a decision on the issue on merits.

The Ohio-based president of PBT,Dr Kunal Saha,on Thursday said in a fax message that the High Court had earlier dismissed a PIL by PBT against the 2010 election of Dr Desai to GU Senate.

He said a subsequent plea before the Supreme Court resulted in the apex court giving “liberty” to it to approach the appropriate authority in GU.

He said the University Chancellor, who is the appropriate authority in this case, refused to respond to the plea after which PBT filed the PIL before High Court on June 20.

BPT maintained the election of Desai to the GU Senate was illegal and that he got himself elected only to reach MCI once more as representative of GU Senate.
