(Express Photo) Gujarat BJP president CR Paatil Tuesday said that former Prime Ministers belonging to Congress Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi were popular because they were “good-looking” and the country does not remember any work they did during their tenure.
Addressing a gathering of BJP leaders and party workers in Vadodara’s Sayaji Nagar Gruh, Paatil said, “Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of the country and also the PM for the longest time… What were the reasons for his popularity? That he was the first PM; he was good-looking and very rich. It was said that there were 17 doors in his bungalow and no matter which door he walked out of, a chauffeur driven car waited for him at the door. His clothes came from London and Doha…”
“At that time there was a lot of poverty… Today, there are many rich people. At that time, people were enchanted with him. Not a single person in this country remembers any work that Nehru did in the 18 years of being Prime Minister,” Paatil claimed.
Paatil went on to compare former Late Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee and said, “After Nehru, came Indira Gandhi. She was the first woman PM. She was beautiful to look at. She was Nehru’s daughter and had a Gandhi surname. She captured the party in the infighting that year… She is credited for winning the war that created Bangladesh; Vajpayee, too, had congratulated her. But in the 16 years of being Prime Minister, what did she do. She only gave the slogan, ‘Gareebi Hatao’. Did the Gareebi actually go away? At least, I cannot remember any development work that she did because of which the country progressed…”
“Vajpayee was a very good orator and had a polite personality… The opposition also respected him and sat down to hear his speeches. He was the Prime Minister, who made the first successful attempt to make India a nuclear power and also won the Kargil war. But the people of this country remember him not for nuclear power but for his humility, politeness, and wisdom,” Paatil said.
Stating that it is PM Modi, whose “effective” leadership had earned India a “world recognition”, Paatil said, “ Not just India but the world has accepted that he is the ‘Vikas purush’… he has lived up to the expectations of the people and has the commitment to development.”
Paatil added that despite the Congress “threat” that Kashmir would “witness a bloodbath”, Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah went on to abrogate Article 370.
He also conducted a lecture on social media usage for the leaders in Vadodara.
