Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda on Saturday visited All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rajkot to inaugurate the institute’s advanced Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL), which is set to reduce the institute’s dependence on other laboratory for tests.
In a statement to the media, the AIIMS said: “This is a BSL (biosafety level) 2 capacity laboratory and very soon, it will become a BSL 3 laboratory. So far, this institute was dependent on National Institute of Virology in Pune for detection of viruses. But now, it will be able to do it on its own and become self-sufficient.”
Nadda, while addressed doctors at AIIMS, said that construction of remaining buildings of AIIMS in Rajkot are in full swing. He expressed hope that it will be completed soon.
“The VRDL at AIIMS Rajkot is designed to serve as a critical hub for the diagnosis and research of over 25 viruses, including those responsible for major public health concerns such as dengue, Chikungunya, influenza, Hepatitis, and Covid-19. The laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge technology, ensuring rapid and accurate diagnostic results, which are crucial for timely intervention and management of viral outbreaks,” the statement added.
