Mohan Bhagwat’s comments at GSPFP event taken out of context, says chairman

Bhagwat’s comments on communities in India making their disputes public being detrimental to India's image as a world leader (vishwaguru) and his suggestion to resolve political and religious disagreements behind closed doors had raised a controversy.

Days after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s address at an event of political think tank Global Strategic Policy Foundation Pune (GSPFP) sparked a controversy, GSPFP chairman Anant Bhagwat on Wednesday said that the RSS chief’s statements were taken “out of context” as he only spoke of “uniting for a cause”.

Bhagwat’s comments on communities in India making their disputes public being detrimental to India’s image as a world leader (vishwaguru) and his suggestion to resolve political and religious disagreements behind closed doors had raised a controversy.

Anant Bhagwat, who was in Garudeshwar in Narmada district on Wednesday, said, “We (GSPFP) are only the organisers of these events, where we invite guests, who have a social message, to address the people. We do not have a role in the speech they deliver but the topic of RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwatji was Bharat as Vishwaguru and the statement he made was not specifically an advice to any individual or political party or community. He was addressing people of Bharat at large, in the best interest of the country; if someone takes a sentence out of context, we cannot help it.”

He further added, “Bhagwatji put forth its point that was a request to communities as well as political parties that in order to make India a Vishwaguru, everyone would have to put forth an image that can be taken as a role model; under this, all political controversies over mandir and masjid should be resolved amicably within a closed room and not on streets with vandalism. If communities indulge in violence on streets, the world will not accept them as role models for being Vishwaguru… He did not nag any political party but people are attempting to take a political advantage out of some anecdotes he stated in his speech.”
