City markets remained abuzz on Christmas eve as people thronged for last-minute shopping, with ‘Made in China’ artificial Christmas trees remaining one of the favourite buys this season.

In the bustling Walled City market around Teen Darwaza, plastic trees and decoration items are the most sought after buys not only among the devout, but also among small shopkeepers and mall owners, vendors claim.

Priced between Rs 50 and Rs 2,200,these trees are available in four different types — green, snow laden, with optic fibre that lights up and pine tree lookalike. The green ones are the most popular among shopping mall owners, even as their prices go up to Rs 50,000.

“These trees are made in China. In the last three years, demand for optic and pine trees has increased,” said Irfan Kadiwala,a shopowner who claimed to have sold 15 such trees this season.

Another vendor,Sheikh Mohammed Ahmed, said that ‘made in India’ trees are also available. “Small ones cost Rs 225 while bigger ones cost upto Rs 950. They come from Kerala.”

Imtiyaz Ahmed, another vendor, said that decoration items come from Pune, while stars come from Kerala and Chennai. “While gift items come from Mumbai and Kolkata, thermocol decorations are made in Ahmedabad itself,” he added.
